Cos Cob

Historic charm meets modern living in Cos Cob, a scenic, self-contained gem of Greenwich, CT.

Welcome to Cos Cob

Cos Cob is one of Greenwich’s most established neighborhoods, located along the western bank of the Mianus River and extending toward the harbor that leads into Long Island Sound. With its own zip code, post office, library, and elementary school, Cos Cob operates like a self-contained village within the town—one that offers charm, history, and everyday convenience.

The area’s name goes back to early settler Joe Coe, who built a seawall to protect his waterfront land. Locals began calling it “Coe’s Cob,” which eventually became “Cos Cob.” The neighborhood’s early inhabitants included the Siwanoy Indians, followed by Dutch and English settlers in the 1600s.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Cos Cob served as a key shipping port. Despite its rocky terrain, it was known for growing apples, potatoes, and onions, which were sent by boat to New York City. The Bush-Holley House—built during this period—still stands today as a National Historic Landmark. The expansion of the railroad eventually reduced the harbor’s importance, but Cos Cob soon found new energy as a hub for the arts.

By the late 19th century, Cos Cob had become an important art colony, attracting creatives like John Twachtman, William Merritt Chase, and Childe Hassam. Writers such as Willa Cather and Eugene O’Neill also spent time here, and Anya Seton, daughter of Boy Scouts founder Ernest Seton, lived on Bible Street.

Modern-day Cos Cob is a mix of historic homes, quiet residential streets, and natural beauty. It features both public and private marinas, playgrounds at local schools, and green spaces like Montgomery Pinetum. There are no major commercial zones, but Downtown and Riverside are close by, offering everything from shopping to dining. Cos Cob’s blend of accessibility, character, and community continues to make it one of Greenwich’s most desirable places to live.
